COVID-19 has delayed the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to provide the stimulus needed to set African economies on greener trajectories, as outlined in the African Union Green Recovery Action Plan. There is now a strategic opportunity to advance green recovery efforts through the provisions included in the AfCFTA, as well as advance more aligned African trade and climate positions at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
This event, co-organised by ODI’s Supporting Investment and Trade in Africa (SITA) team, with the African Centre for Economic Transformation and the African Trade Policy Centre at the UN Economic Commission for Africa, will explore how to align Africa’s green recovery through climate compatible trade and the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
During this event, our panel will discuss how to secure climate compatible trade, including by securing greater alignment with African countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and trade policy, and by building on measures adopted elsewhere as part of green recovery endeavours. The panel will make specific reference to upcoming African-case studies developed under SITA, including Least Developed Countries, and draw out the broader implications for WTO members in securing climate compatible trade.
This event will be streamed online on the WTO Public Forum platform. If you would like to join us, please register for the WTO Public Forum 2021 by 27 September. You will then receive your log in details. On 01 October, please log in and find us on the WTOPF21 interactive platform.
