Jeffrey Y. Campbell works as the Manager of the Forest and Farm Facility (FFF) at FAO in Rome. Born and raised in India, Campbell is a US citizen with over two decades of experience in community forestry, rural development and philanthropy. Before joining FAO, he worked at the Christensen Fund as Director of Grant Making and at the Ford Foundation in India, Nepal, Indonesia and New York as Program Officer, Senior Program Officer and Deputy Director (1991-2008).

About the webinar
How to ensure resilience of smallholder production systems in times of crisis? How farmers and forest producer organizations (FFPOs) maintain functionality during and after the disturbances, and mitigate potential losses in the smallholder value-chains? What is the current and future FPPOs capacity to respond to climate hazards and non-climate stresses such as Covid-19 pandemic?
In the face of COVID-19, smallholder farmers and forest producers face the challenge of how to balance short term shocks and longer-term risks such as climate change. One of the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis is the disruption of agricultural and forestry supply chains and a re-shuffling of actors. These critical issues will be discussed with forest and farm producer organisations (FFPOs) in an international web event series organised on the 9-11 June 2020.
The event is hosted by Food and Forest Development Finland (FFD), AgriCord, and the Forest and Farm Facility (a partnership between FAO, IIED, IUCN, and AgriCord) in collaboration with the Asian Farmers’ Association (AFA) and the Pan-African Farmers’ Organization (PAFO). The conference includes a series of web-seminars with pre-recorded and live interactive consultations.
The goals of the event are:
- To gain understanding of FFPO responses and strategies (locally, nationally, regionally) in thriving greater resilience, with specific focus on climate change and Covid-19 responses.
- To engage institutional stakeholders on the agenda, increase their awareness in FFPO resilience, and to provide recommendations to these actors, and to exchange best practices and tools for increased resilience.
- To formulate common policy positions to promote resilient pathways to resilience, with specific focus on climate change and Covid-19.
The conference will be in English.

About the speakers
Esther Penunia
Ma. Estrella “Esther” Penunia is Secretary General of the Asian Farmers’ Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA), a regional farmers organization (FO), currently with 20 national FOs in 16 Asian countries, with around 13 million family farmers as members.
Esther spent more than three decades of professionally in the field of rural development, working in various capacities as community organizer, primary health care worker, participatory action researcher, trainer, gender advocate, consultant, campaigns coordinator, chief executive officer, board member and networker.
Fatma Ben Rejeb
CEO, Pan-African Farmers’ Organization (PAFO)
Fatma Ben Rejeb has been working with farmers organisations for more than 20 years. She began her involvement in land and legal affairs with farmers and their grassroots organizations. Subsequently, she held the administrative and financial management then the international cooperation and the partnership management at the Tunisian national farmers organization. She has been Director of the North African Farmers’ Network, UMNAGRI. Fatma received a Diploma of Advanced Studies in Political Science, a Masters in Juridical Sciences and a Certificate of Specialized Studies in Political and International Studies. She is fluent in Arabic, French, English, Italian and basic knowledge in Spanish.
Markku Kanninen
Director of the Viikki Tropical Resources Institute (VITRI)
Dr. Markku Kanninen is the professor of Tropical Silviculture and Director of Viikki Natural Resources Institute (VITRI) at the University of Helsinki, Finland. He is an expert in tropical forestry, climate change, forest ecology, and forest management. He has published over 350 publications, including over 100 internationally peer-reviewed scientific articles.
He has been involved in tropical forest research for about 40 years. Prior to his current position, he was Director of the Environmental Services and Sustainable Use of Forests Program of CIFOR (2003-2010); Deputy Director General of CATIE (Costa Rica) (1996-2003); and earlier the Director of The Finnish Research Program on Climate Change (1990-1995).
He has been involved in science policy dialogue on forests and climate change for about 30 years, and he has been actively involved in the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) since 1990. He was a Lead Author of the recent IPCC Special Report on 1.5 Degrees. From 2011 to 2019, he was member of the Finnish Climate Panel.
Since 2004, he has been a member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences and Letters. He received the Nobel Peace Prize as a member of the IPCC in 2007.
