Sex is the biological categorization of a person as male, female, or intersex. Sex is assigned at birth based on biological indicators, including hormones, sex chromosomes, internal reproductive organs, and external genitalia. Sex and gender are commonly conflated, which contributes to widespread erroneous beliefs that cultural practices, roles, and norms around gender are biologically determined and therefore cannot be changed.
