The Regulatory Framework for Varietal Testing and Release in India

Abstract

This chapter considers the development of a regulatory framework for variety testing, release and dissemination of seed to farmers in India. The central testing, identification and varietal release procedures are described, with particular mention of the All India Coordinated Crop Improvement Projects testing system. Inconsistencies between the Central and State Systems and between individual State systems are discussed and popularisation and seed production reviewed.
