Parametric Solutions for Climate Migrants in East and Horn of Africa

Abstract

Climate mobility in Africa, particularly in the East and Horn of Africa, is escalating due to climate change and ecosystem degradation, leading to agricultural droughts and increased migration. Over 3 million hectares of natural habitat are converted to cropland annually, driven by poverty and food insecurity. By 2050, climate change may cause internal migration of up to 216 million people globally. Parametric insurance offers a solution by enhancing access to financing for affected populations, as seen in the African Risk Capacity program, which provided early assistance to 244,000 people in 2020. This approach can foster resilience against climate impacts.
