Bringing back bananas

Abstract

Although Uganda is the world’s second-largest producer of bananas, productivity has declined markedly over the last 25 years, with yields falling as low as 6 tonnes/ha and plantation longevity shortening from 50 years to 5–10 years in some areas. Luwero district in central Uganda, once a traditional banana-growing area, has been hit particularly badly. Two CPP banana projects (R7567, R7972) are contributing to a multi-donor effort to revive banana production in Uganda.

This highlight report is associated with projects R7567 and R7972.
