National Water Commission, Mexico

The National Water Commission (CONAGUA) is a decentralized administrative body of Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, created in 1989, whose responsibility is to administer, regulate, control and protect national waters in Mexico.

CONAGUA’s headquarters are located in Mexico City and its main actions include: supporting basin organizations and local directorates in carrying out the necessary actions to achieve the sustainable use of water in each region of the country; establishing the national hydraulic policy and strategies; integrating the institution’s budget and monitor its application; arranging the credits required by the hydraulic sector with national and international financial organizations; establishing programs to support municipalities in the supply of drinking water services and sanitation in cities and rural communities; and promoting the efficient use of water in irrigation and industry.
